The following month, the July 1919 Parish Magazine reported:

“Two very largely attended Meetings were held in the Drax Hall last month to
arrange for the erection of a Memorial to the Sailors and Soldiers from this parish Bere Regis Sports Club | Christmas Cup of Good Cheer and Presentation Evening

unanimous in agreeing that a Cross, inscribed with the names of the Fallen should
be erected in the Churchyard. The Cross will stand facing Church Lane on the
Western side of the public footpath so that it can be seen from the main road.
A committee, comprising one near relative of each fallen man, with one or two
others, is to be responsible to the design... We trust that the relations of those,
whose names are to be on the base of the Cross, will feel that the memorial really
has a twofold object, first to commemorate the Fallen and, secondly to express
real and deep sympathy for themselves, upon whom the sorrows of the War have
come so heavily.”
The Parish Magazine for August 1919 reported:
“Another important step has been made towards the erection of the War
Memorial and that is the collection of sufficient money for the purpose... we may
state that here that upwards of £150 has come in, and that is sufficient to provide
