WILD WOODBURY
Invertebrates
While the start of 2024 has surely been wet, there have been a smattering of
sunny days which were well received by our invertebrates.
In under 3 years, over 1,600 species have been recorded at Wild Woodbury, with
a large proportion of these being invertebrates. Invertebrates are animals that
lack a backbone and make up approximately 90% of all living species. By
restoring the natural processes at Wild Woodbury and making space for nature,
we have seen an increase in both the diversity and the abundance of
invertebrates. Such organisms play a vital role in our ecosystem; some are
pollinators, others are ecological engineers, and all are a source of food for
animals further up the food chain.
In the space of just an hour on a partly sunny day in mid-May, I went for a short
walk around the southern side of the site and was ecstatic to see so many
invertebrates, both those I could identify and those which required delving into
the identification books.
