NEWS FROM WESTMINSTER
As always, events in Westminster are moving very
fast. I will not try to address anything Brexit related in
this column, but you can catch up with the latest on
my website and if you like sign up to my newsletter:

I’m sure many of you saw news reports about the
Extinction Rebellion demonstrations in London. One
part of the protest was to create a fledgling forest of
native potted trees in Old Palace yard. MPs were
invited to collect a tree to plant in their constituency
as a reforesting action. I was delighted to collect my Hornbeam, and I look
forward to planting it in Dorset. Trees have such an important part to play in
regulating our environment.
This point was emphasised during a fascinating debate in the House of Commons
on the deforestation of the Amazon. This debate was prompted by an e-petition
asking Parliament to consider the issue. It showed that climate and environmental
concerns are worldwide, and that our efforts must continue to be made by taking
a lead as a country as well as working internationally.
The environment and climate change also featured
in a series of meetings both in London and Dorset. I
met a representative from Ideas 2 Action in Poole to
Dorchester discuss their recycling projects, which encourage
people to reuse and recycle items that would
Framing otherwise be going to landfill. They collect a wide
range of items in lots of different places including
Picture and framing service libraries, schools and cafes. They are also looking for
with a wide selection of storage space in the Poole area, so do get in touch if
mounts and frames. you think you could help. Please do check to see if
they are collecting things near you that could be
Open most days but best reused. www.ideas2action.org.uk is their website. I have discussed local
call first before making a environmental concerns with many constituents, including pollutants in Poole
special trip. harbour, and the important role played by farmers in helping to manage our local
countryside.

Dorset Council is also playing its part, as the Leader recently explained to me,
The Old School House setting out the work they are doing following their declaration of a climate
emergency. I confirmed that I have invited the Minister responsible for railways to
Tincleton DT2 8QR
visit Dorset to see for himself the issues surrounding Wareham’s pedestrian level
01305 848909 crossing and to see whether progress can be made.
