was waiting for, the calculation of the rebate. This was something we all benefited
from and in the nineteen forties a few pounds was a lot of money and certainly
bought sweets for us boys. Originally I wrote a lot of sweets but of course these
were end of war time and sweets like everything else were rationed. My
grandmother was however, a believer in that old saying, “A fool and his money
are soon parted”.
We, that is my mother, my two brothers and myself lived with my maternal grand-
parents in the nineteen forties, as my father was in India. Despite the fact this
began with war time, we had a wonderful time there, with even going out and
watching “dooddle bugs” flying over. Possibly to create absolute mayhem further
north. We were extremely lucky in that no bombs were actually targeted on our
village. I was going to include a picture of the house that my brother had painted
shortly before his death but unfortunately I cannot find it.
On this note I will say goodbye and God bless you all and remember “A journey of
a thousand miles begins with a single step”.
So for goodness sake where you are taking that step, especially if you are retired
be careful. All the very best to all who read this.

PS. I am completing this several days earlier than I usually do i.e. on the 12 of the
th
month and I have been already told this is not up to my usual
staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaandard by my assistant editor, so my apologies for that. I
just wanted to complete it before anything else strange happened to the
weather. After all “A bad excuse is better than none.”
