       OFFICE AND SHOP

It’s puzzling where the summer goes. The swifts
have left and so have many of our visitors. It was
nice to see how many visitors to the village used
the PO and shop and said how good it was to see that the village was
maintaining such a valuable asset with a great community spirit.

It seems that, finally, our problems with the till system have been resolved. It’s
been quite a slog for the volunteers working behind the shop counter and for
many customers but, most of all, for David and Campbell who have stuck with
analysing the problems and liaising with both BT and the software supplier.
Hopefully everything will now be OK.

A good number of entries for the 2024 Calendar have been received and the
next stage of photographing the entries and deciding on a layout is under way.
Small local shops like ours are often thought to be expensive, but we actually
stock quite a few items that are equal to, or below, the recommended retail
price. Generally speaking, we add 12.5% to whatever we have to pay our
suppliers. That 12.5% is intended to cover the overheads which include wages for
the weekend staff, electricity, WiFi costs, insurance, wastage, ground rent, card
payment fees, Sainsbury’s delivery charges, fire protection services, pest control
       and building maintenance.

We do not exist to make a profit, but just to cover the cost of running the shop.
Many of our suppliers give us discounts that enable us to sell their items at the
same price that they would charge
                                           themselves, such as Curtis butchers,
Williams bakery and Nordale (bird food).
The goods that we buy from the ‘Cash
and Carry’ we can often sell for a lower
price than you would find locally; this is a
benefit that we like to pass on to you.
We do not get a discount from
Sainsbury’s where most of our non-
perishable stock comes from so our
