The family at first went to live with their maternal grandmother in a huge
draughty house called Oak Lawn on the Isle of Wight to await passage to
Canada where they were going to start a new life. However a change in the
rules scuppered the scheme and she watched the Queen Mary, the boat they
should have been on, sailing past the Isle of Wight on the way to Canada
without them.

Instead of going to Canada our grandfather set up a
market gardening business in Devon and the family
moved to a house called Tatts in Tavistock. It was at
Tatts that my mother’s love affair with geese started
with two Emden Toulouse geese called Dilly and Dally.
Dilly was such a fierce gander that her father had to
carry a stick to protect himself, whilst she became
known as the Goose Girl and they were always her
favourite animals.
