habitat for many birds. This month we have some wonderful pictures of some of
the birds photographed by Tony and Roger Bates here over the past few years.
These are goldfinch, blackcap, the now uncommon spotted flycatcher, the
charming little wren, a greater blue tit and a heron. The blue tit has taken up
residence in one of the nest boxes we put up. The heron often comes fishing here
along with a little egret. Another less common birds seen is the tree creeper
spotted on some of the larger trees, whilst in winter redwings arrive and feed on
wet pools in Souls Moor.
Join Us on our Conservation Working Parties
A very big thank you to all who have helped at recent conservation working
parties, and an especially warm welcome to a number of new people who have
joined us over the past few months. The more helpers we have, the more we can
achieve.
Please come and join us at the next Working Party – Saturday 12th March; all are
welcome (under 16s should be accompanied by an adult). No experience is
required, there’s a friendly crowd and it is great fun and exercise too! Or, just pop
along and find out more about what we are doing.
We will meet by the stream bridge
near to the Scout Hut, Elder Road at
10am or you can find us along the
river. We normally finish about 12.00.
If you have some loppers, secateurs,
hand saws or a garden shears please
bring them with you – if you don’t, no
problem we’ll have some spares. We
will be continuing with our winter
tasks including scrub clearance
between the newly surfaced
walkway and the stream. Our efforts
are helping to conserve the best of
what is already present and is helping
to make the area even more wildlife
friendly.
Unfortunately, we have to
say
While carrying out our conservation
work a disconcerting number of
empty wine bottles were found
during the last working party, as
