It is with great sadness and shock that the WI
have learnt about the appalling tragedies taking
place in Ukraine at the moment and that we
can only help the people there by sending
money, clothing, food and personal items. We
think as a country we are doing a wonderful job in supporting these people in
every way possible. We understand that the National flower of the Ukraine is the
Sunflower which symbolizes unity and happiness. Let us hope that it will be
flowering again in their country in the very near future.
On a happier note our last meeting in February was a
wonderful interpretation by Trisha Lewis of memories of
Joyce Grenfell "don't do that George"! Trisha dressed
up in the style of Joyce and sounded just like her when
she sang and spoke to us as if she was talking to a
class of children! (No comment!!!).
Joyce was born in 1920 in London and her Mother's
sister was Lady Astor. She married at 18 to Reggie
Grenfell but had always been interested in acting and
observing people young and old. She even met Noel
Coward who encouraged her to take up entertaining.
When her aunt started a Nursery School in Slough she
worked there for a while and took her many sketches
from watching the children.

the table"

She became a member of a Revue that toured
America when she even sat next to Elvis!
When the war broke out she joined ENSA and travelled the world entertaining the
troops.
Her most famous song was "Stately as a Galleon" which Trisha sang to us and her
signature tune written during the war was "I'm going to see you today'.

She died in 1989 and has a memorial in Westminster Abbey.
It was a very interesting and amusing evening. Our next meeting in April will be
our AGM so anyone is welcome to come to the Sports Club on the 20th April at 7
pm.
