THE BRIANTSPUDDLE OPEN: 29 AUGUST
2022
In accordance with
hallowed tradition,
a select group of
ten golfers set out
on the main course
at the Dorset Golf
and Country Club
Resort on Bank
Holiday Monday, to
do battle for the
m u c h - c o v e t e d
Claret Jug.
Format this year was
a n i n d i v i d u a l
competition for best
Stableford score,
plus prizes for longest drive and nearest the pin on specified holes. Balmy
conditions and dry fairways, allowing for long runs of the ball, helped make it a
fun and rewarding round, even for the more directionally-challenged players.
The Wimborne contingent pretty much scooped the pool on prizes, with David
and Edward Beardsley coming first and second respectively, and the longest
drive award going to Martha Tucker – who also won the hotly-contested(!) Ladies’
prize. Third place overall was shared among Steve Wood, Martha and Phil Long,
who also achieved nearest the pin on the seventh.
An impromptu award also went to Steve Snaith, who amply maintained his late
father Robin’s tradition of X-ray eyes for spotting golf balls in bushes, having
picked up half a dozen during the round. His prize? A golf ball!
As always, the Club did us proud, laying on an excellent lunch for the eighteen or
so players and guests who attended, as well as providing us with course markers
and smooth, if slightly drought-affected, fairways and greens. Plans are already
being laid for next year’s event; so do register your interest even if you are not a
previous participant or professional golfer, but fancy a fun day of not too serious
sport followed by a great meal!
