 Rona II – the Explorers’ Tall Ship Adventure

 This summer, 12 members of the Kingsbere Explorer Unit delivered a sailing boat   th  Kris Meehan and Gordon
 back  from  the  annual  Tall  Ships  Race  in  the  Baltic.  We  collected  Rona  II,  the   28  September   Rushmore Golf Club   Whitbread Pairs   Thursfield
 flagship of the Rona Sailing Trust, from Dover and sailed her 411 nautical miles in
 eight  days  back  to  the  Trust’s  base  at  Hamble,  near  Southampton  via  the   26  October    Lyme Regis Golf Club   Zoom Trophy

 was  expectantly  thrust  into  the  role  of  Watch  Leader  which  he  coped  with
 admirably.

 On  arrival  at  Dover,  no  time  was  lost  getting
 underway  and  crossing  the  very  busy  shipping
 lanes of the English Channel to Boulogne on the
 French  coast.  The  next  day  took  us  to  Dieppe
 where, in the course of a run ashore and under
 the  direction  of  Phil,  the  crew  re-enacted  the
 raid on Dieppe beach which occurred almost to
 the  day,  76  years  previously,  on  the  19  August
 1942.  We  paid  our  respects  at  the  Canadian
 Memorial  to  the  more  than  1000  young  men
 who died during the 6 hour raid.
 The  next  day  was  a  long  sail  to  Cherbourg
 where  we  went  ashore  for  our  crew  meal  with
 the  Skipper  and  afterguard.  The  next  stop  was
