Bere Regis School Apprentice Afternoons: ‘It
inspires me!’
Apprentice Afternoons are a new educational event that run
once a month at Bere Regis Primary School. We do this
because it helps us to learn new skill (such as knitting, sign
language, golf, drawing, singing, cooking, origami, first aid). These are run by
teachers and parents that are kind-hearted enough to give up their time to help
us learn a new skill. We really enjoy them and we would like to learn some more,
different skills.
It was fun to work with different age groups and
children we wouldn’t normally see. We got to know
each other better and each and every one of us
learnt new skills to use. It is a really fun afternoon
because we get to choose from a range of activities
which we don’t always get the chance to do in
class. The Apprentice Afternoons are positive
because you learn new things and develop skills
such as common sense, confidence and
responsibility.
A few people learnt a talent or life skill they can use
in the future. “I can now bake gluten-free cakes
which helps with being a celiac,” a year 6 pupil
called James said. Within the netball
apprenticeships, we learnt the seven positions of the
sport which were: goalkeeper, goal
defence, wing defence, centre, wing
attack, goal attack and goal shooter.
We learnt a lot of netball skills and it
would be good to learn different skills
about other sports.
Some children tried out singing; it was
very enjoyable and some people
improved their singing skills and it
boosted their confidence. It helps to be
able to work with different people. We

National Consumer Week is an annual campaign which aims to raise awareness
of consumer issues, rights and resources available to help people when they need
it. Every year the campaign covers a different topic, and this year the theme is
online marketplaces, specifically focussing on those that sell goods.
This year’s campaign will be launching on the 26th November; ‘Cyber Monday’ a
big pre-Christmas shopping day where there will be millions of people shopping
online, including using online marketplaces. Online shopping is now a big part of
everyday life in the UK. In 2016, £154 billion was spent on the internet in the UK,
and the vast majority of consumers (84%) are considered online shoppers. This shift
to online spending is increasing, and while many online sales will be with
established businesses, a significant proportion are from small or private sellers via
online marketplaces. While there are also benefits, people are having a range of
problems when using online marketplaces. The main issues consumers reported to
the Citizens Advice consumer service were:
● being sold faulty goods, or goods that went faulty shortly after sale.
● goods not arriving or not being sent by the seller.
● goods being misdescribed in the sales adverts.
If you are buying from an online store even if the goods are second hand, you will
still have the right to:
● cancel the goods from the time you placed the order until 14 days from the day
after you received the goods (you then have 14 days from the point of
cancellation to return the goods)
● accurate information and for the goods to be correctly described. The seller
must notify you of any faults or problems with the item
● a right to repair, replacement or refund if the goods are faulty
