                                                                                            It’s  puzzling  where  the  summer  goes.  The  swifts
                                                                                            have  left  and  so  have  many  of  our  visitors. It  was
                                                                                            nice  to  see  how  many  visitors  to  the  village  used
                                                                                            the  PO  and  shop  and  said  how  good  it  was  to  see  that  the  village  was
                                                                                            maintaining such a valuable asset with a great community spirit.

                                                                                            It  seems  that,  finally,  our  problems  with  the  till  system  have  been  resolved.  It’s
                                                                                            been  quite  a  slog  for  the  volunteers  working  behind  the  shop  counter  and  for
                                                                                            many  customers  but,  most  of all,  for David and  Campbell who have  stuck  with
                                                                                            analysing  the  problems  and  liaising  with  both  BT  and  the  software  supplier.
                                                                                            Hopefully everything will now be OK.

                                                                                            A  good  number  of  entries  for  the  2024  Calendar  have  been  received  and  the
                                                                                            next stage of photographing the entries and deciding on a layout is under way.
                                                                                            Small  local  shops  like  ours  are  often  thought  to  be  expensive,  but  we  actually
                                                                                            stock  quite  a  few  items  that  are  equal  to,  or  below,  the  recommended  retail
                                                                                            price.  Generally  speaking,  we  add  12.5%  to  whatever  we  have  to  pay  our
                                                                                            suppliers.  That 12.5% is intended to cover the overheads which include wages for
                                                                                            the  weekend  staff,  electricity,  WiFi  costs, insurance, wastage,  ground rent, card
                                                                                            payment fees, Sainsbury’s delivery charges, fire protection services, pest control
                                                                                            and building maintenance.

                                                                                            We do not exist to make a profit, but just to cover the cost of running the shop.
                                                                                            Many  of  our  suppliers  give  us  discounts  that  enable  us  to  sell  their  items  at  the
                                                                                                                               same  price  that  they  would  charge
                                                                                                                               themselves,  such  as  Curtis  butchers,
                                                                                                                               Williams bakery and Nordale (bird food).
                                                                                                                               The  goods  that  we  buy  from  the  ‘Cash
                                                                                                                               and Carry’ we can often sell for a lower
                                                                                                                               price than you would find locally; this is a
                                                                                                                               benefit that we like to pass on to you.
                                                                                                                               We  do  not  get  a  discount  from
                                                                                                                               Sainsbury’s  where  most  of  our  non-
                                                                                                                               perishable  stock  comes  from  so  our
