A LETTER FROM YOUR ASSOCIATE PRIEST

    21st West Bay
Finding the extraordinary in the ordinary
I was very interested to hear about the discovery of the “sea dragon” in Rutland
October last year and then watch it on the programme ‘Digging for Britain’. By
coincidence we had had a week’s holiday in Rutland last October, somewhere
we had never visited before. The rolling countryside was beautiful and not too
5th Wilton House Garden centre hilly. We had lots of walks around Rutland Water, and that was where this
extraordinary discovery was made last February. The UK’s largest, most complete,
11th Sandy Milne - workshop 2.00pm skeleton of an ichthyosaur – an ocean-going reptile from the time of the
dinosaurs. It is hailed as “one of the greatest finds in British paleontological
SP 20th Salt and Pepper Club history”. We had no idea that this was going on while we were there, but how
exciting. It’s hard to believe that the ocean actually covered all of this area, but
then it was 180 million years ago – quite mind boggling! It has been an
19th Portland Bill extraordinary find amongst the ordinary mud and bird poo of Rutland Water.
I know it seems only a few weeks since Jesus was born, but in our church cycle of
readings we’ve just heard the story of Jesus turning water into wine, his first
miracle. Jesus was at an ordinary party with his friends, when the wine ran out –
every host’s nightmare. Unbeknown to most of the people at the party, Jesus
took six large stone jars and had them filled with ordinary water, when the liquid
