It’s no secret that I love to walk. I’ve always been lucky to live in places where it is
easy to walk in our beautiful countryside, but I’ve even enjoyed walking in cities
December which are often greener than we imagine, if a little harder of the feet. This love of
walking was nurtured in me at a very early age. I can’t remember a time when,
as a family, we didn’t walk. It was very unusual for walking not to be the main
5th Christmas lunch part of our family holidays, a day at the beach was considered very lucky by my
brother, sister and I in a two week holiday, my parents were not fond of the
beach!
Fortunately, we were never put off walking, even when, as teenagers, we had to
carry all our gear between three Youth Hostels on one very rainy October half

Now, of course, I walk with the dog, but I’m just as happy on my own. I can
22nd Carols and Mince Pies remember one work colleague, many years ago, who couldn’t understand how
someone would just ‘go for a walk without a dog or a horse’!
Aside from the physical health benefits, walking is so good for mental wellbeing. I
find it’s a natural stress reliever that helps to clear the mind, reduce anxiety and
depression, and improves my overall mood. And, as long as the dog is behaving,
a walk can also be a great way to unwind, reflect, and recharge.
But, of course, walking is also a social activity that can foster friendships and
